The problem arises from a loose pad on top of the accelerator pedal, which can become trapped in the interior trim, leading to unintended acceleration. Tesla plans to replace or repair the accelerator pedal assembly at no cost to owners. The company attributed the issue to an “unapproved change” that introduced lubricant during component assembly, reducing the retention of the pad to the pedal. Tesla became aware of the problem on March 31, 2024, and decided to issue the recall on April 12. Despite low deliveries of the Cybertruck, totaling under 4,000 units since CEO Elon Musk’s unveiling event on November 30, 2023, Tesla reported disappointing first-quarter vehicle deliveries for 2024, dropping 8.5% from the same quarter last year. CNBC inquired with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about the issue after Martinez’s video went viral, prompting public awareness. The NHTSA acknowledged three vehicle owner complaints and stated that it utilizes various data sources, including social media and vehicle owner forums, in its enforcement processes.
